Boosting GIFs as ads

30/11/2019

GIFs can be uploaded via Ads Manager or published in a post from your Page. GIFs can be used as ads on Facebook, Instagram and Audience Network. GIFs will play and loop in the same way as videos and have the same file size requirement (4 GB). You'll also see all our video metrics in your measurement tools.

To boost a post with a GIF from your Facebook Page

You can use gifs when you make any type of ad from your Page. Click the blue Promote button on the left to see all the ad format options.

  1. Create a post with a link to your GIF or upload a GIF directly.
  2. If you used a link, wait for the preview of your GIF to load.
  3. Post it to your Page.
  4. Find the post on your Page (you may need to reload).
  5. You can now click Boost Post to promote it to an audience beyond your Facebook followers.

Upload a GIF in Ads Manager

  1. Choose any objective that supports video.
  2. Select Single video in the Format section.
  3. Upload your .gif file exactly as you would a video.

Tip: If you don't have a link to a GIF already, you can use a GIF website such as GIPHY:

  1. Go to GIPHY.com.
  2. Upload a new GIF or choose an existing GIF to use in your post.
  3. Click on the ADVANCED tab below the GIF.
  4. Select the link in the GIF DOWNLOAD field to find available GIFs for upload in Ads Manager. You can also copy (CMD+C/CTRL+C) and paste (CMD+V/CTRL+V) a GIF link to your Page post. Please note that GIFs follow the same ads policy copyright guidelines as all formats on Facebook. Learn more

For best results

  • Choose high-quality images or animations.
  • Choose subtle motion.
  • Use a link ending with .gif.
  • Use a GIF with a file size less than 8 MB.
  • Use a GIF with less than 20% text on the image.
  • Avoid GIFs that flash or are grainy, as your boosted post may not be approved.
  • Avoid splashy, one-off posts. The best GIFs are used in a series to tell a bigger story.
  • GIFs may not play on all mobile devices. For better results on older phones and slower networks, try slideshow video ads.
