What to do if you started the identity confirmation process but your government ID was rejected
If you've taken steps to complete the identity confirmation process at https://www.facebook.com/id, the information you provided to confirm your identity will be reviewed.
If we aren't able to confirm your identity using the information you provided, you'll get a message or notification letting you know why. Below, you'll find some of the reasons why your identity may be rejected and the steps you can take to fix the issue.
During the identity review process, the surname on the government ID that you uploaded will need to match the surname on your Facebook profile or an approved "other name" that you add to your Facebook profile.
If you see a message or notification letting you know that the names don't match, below are some steps that you can take to fix the issue and complete your identity confirmation.
Option 1: Update your Facebook profile name
You can change your Facebook profile name by filling in and submitting this form. Remember that the surname on your profile must match what's on the government ID that you submitted.
Once you've completed the form, it will be reviewed. If your name change is accepted and matches the government ID that you uploaded while completing the identity confirmation steps, your identity confirmation will automatically be approved. To verify your approval, visit https://www.facebook.com/id to see your identity confirmation status.
Option 2: Set up "other names" on our Facebook profile
If you don't want to change the name displayed on your Facebook profile, you'll have the option to add other names. If you choose to add other names, you can select and update one of the following name types*:
- Maiden name
- Married name
- Birth name
- Former name
Note: Only the categories listed above will be used to confirm your identity. If you update a different category such as "nickname" or "alternative spelling", these won't be reviewed and won't change the status of your identity confirmation.
The updated name that you provide must include a surname that matches the surname on the government ID that you uploaded when completing the identity confirmation process. If it doesn't, your identity confirmation won't be confirmed.
Once you've updated one of the approved "other name" fields, you can visit https://www.facebook.com/id to check your identity confirmation status.
Your ID may be rejected if there's a problem with the photo you submitted, such as it being too blurry or having a glare. If you see a message or notification letting you know that your ID was rejected for this reason, below are some steps you can take to fix the issue and complete your identity confirmation.
Option 1: Submit another photo of your ID
You can submit a new photo by clicking the notification saying that your ID was rejected or by going to https://www.facebook.com/id. There, find the authorisation with the error, click Try Again and then follow the rest of the instructions.
When taking a new photo, avoid any glare on your ID and make sure that all of the edges are visible against a dark background. Once you've submitted your new photo, it'll have to be reviewed again to confirm your identity.
Option 2: Submit an appeal
If you think that there's nothing wrong with the photo you submitted and that we made a mistake rejecting it, you can appeal our decision.
To submit an appeal, click the notification saying that your ID was rejected, or go to https://www.facebook.com/id. There, find the authorisation with the error, click submit an appeal, enter a reason why you think we made a mistake and then click Submit. After submitting your appeal, allow 48 hours for a response.
If you received a notification saying that your identity couldn't be confirmed using the information you provided, you can see more details by going to https://www.facebook.com/id.
There, you'll be able to review information explaining why your ID couldn't be confirmed. You can then either take the suggested action or appeal our decision if you think we made a mistake. If you submit an appeal, allow 48 hours for a response.
