Managing users, owners, and permissions

30/11/2019

A Search Console property supports the following roles:

  • Owner: Owners have full control over properties in Search Console. They can add and remove other users, configure settings, view all data, and use all tools. There are two types of owners, although the distinction is not visible in the Search Console website.  A property must have at least one verified owner, or no users will have access to the property.
    • Verified owner: Performed some action to verify ownership of the property, or Google could deduce ownership; for example, the Blogger account and Search Console account are the same Google account. All owners added by a verified owner using Search Console will be delegated owners.
    • Delegated owner: Has never verified ownership of a property. Can add other delegated owners.
  • User: Users can view all data and take some actions, but cannot add other users. A user must be added by an owner. There are two types of users:
    • Full: Has view rights to most data, and can take some actions.
    • Restricted: Has simple view rights on most data.
  • Associate: A Google property (such as a Google+ or Google Ads account) or a mobile app can be associated with a website through Search Console. If someone requests association with your website through Search Console, it will grant them capabilities that are specific to the type of thing that they are associating with you. For example, associating a mobile app with a website tells Google Search to show search result links that point to the app rather than the website when appropriate.

We lost our site owner!

If the verified owner of your site leaves, or you're not sure who the verified owner is, verify another site owner. The new owner will be able to see the list of all owners and users verified to that site, as well as the verification methods for each owner. You can then optionally unverify previous owners by removing their verification token (for example, removing the HTML tag from the site, for HTML-tag-verified owners). See Add or remove owners for more information.

Add or remove owners

Owners have full control over properties in Search Console. They can add and remove other users, configure settings, view all data, and use all tools. If you want to give someone more limited permissions, add them as a user instead.

To add an owner

  1. Choose a property in Search Console.
  2. Click the gear icon , then select Users & Property Owners.
  3. Click the Manage property owners link.
  4. In the Verified owners section, click Add an owner. Note that any owners you add are actually delegated owners, not verified owners.
  5. Type the email address of the owner you want to add, then click Continue.
  6. The new owner can now add the new property to their Search Console account, where it will be automatically verified.

To delete an owner

You cannot permanently delete a verified owner (someone who as verified their ownership of a property), only a delegated owner, unless you also remove the verified owner's token from the source (for example, remove the HTML tag from the page or the token from the app manifest).

  1. Choose a property in Search Console.
  2. Click the gear icon , then select Users & Property Owners.
  3. Click the Manage property owners link.
  4. In the Verified owners section, click Unverify next to the owner you want to remove. The change should take effect very quickly.

Add or remove users

A property can have a maximum of 100 full or restricted users.

To add a user

  1. Choose a property in Search Console.
  2. Click the gear icon , then select Users & Property Owners.
  3. Click Add a new user.
  4. Type the email address of the user you want to add and select the type of user.
  5. Click Add.
  6. The property will be added to the new user's Search Console account automatically.

To delete a user

  1. Choose a property in Search Console.
  2. Click the gear icon , then select Users & Property Owners.
  3. Select the user to delete and click Delete. The change should take effect very quickly.

Add or remove associates

To add an associate

If someone wants to associate with your Search Console website you will get a request with instructions emailed to you about how to add the associate.

To delete an associate

  1. Choose a property in Search Console.
  2. Click the gear icon , then select Associates.
  3. Select the associate to delete and click Delete. The change should take effect very quickly.

If all verified property owners are either removed or lose verification, then all delegated owners, users, and associates will lose access to the Search Console property, after a grace period. Data for the property will continue to be collected, but nobody will have access to it until someone verifies ownership of the property.
