Stop, limit, or change sharing

After you share a file, you can stop sharing a file at any time. You can also prevent someone you’ve shared with from changing or sharing your file.
Stop sharing a file
If you share a file with people, the owner or anyone with edit access can change the sharing settings for the file.
Stop sharing a file
- Open the homescreen for Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides.
- Select a file or folder.
- Click Share or Share
.
- At the bottom right of the "Share with others" window, click Advanced.
- Next to the person you want to stop sharing with, click Remove
.
- Click Save changes.
Delete a link to a file
When you delete a link to a file, the only people who can still see the file will be you and people whose names or email addresses you share with.
- Open the homescreen for Google Drive, Google Docs, Google Sheets, or Google Slides.
- Open or select a file.
- Click Share or Share
.
- Next to "Anyone with the link," click the Down arrow
.
- Click More.
- Click the circle next to "Off - Specific people."
- Click Save.
- Click Done.
Delete a shared file
If you delete a shared file that you own:
- People that can view, comment, or edit can make a copy of the file until you permanently delete it.
- To permanently delete the file, click the file in your trash, and click Delete forever

If you delete a shared file that you don’t own:
- The file will be removed from your Drive , but other collaborators can still access it.
- To get the file back, open a link to the file
click File
Add to My Drive.
Prevent others from sharing your files
Don’t let people download, print, or copy your file
By default, people who can edit your shared files can:
- Share the file with others.
- Add or remove specific people.
- Copy, print, or download the file.
To prevent commenters and viewers from downloading, printing, or copying your file:
- Click Share or Share
.
- In the bottom right, click Advanced.
- Check the box next to "Disable options to download, print, and copy for commenters and viewers."
- Click Save changes.
- Click Done.
Note: You can limit how people share, print, download, and copy within Google Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides, but you can't stop how others share the file content in other ways.
Prevent others from sharing your shared files
If you’re sharing a file, the owner or anyone with edit access can change the sharing settings for the file. To make it so only you can share:
- Click Share or Share
.
- In the bottom right, click Advanced.
- Check the box next to "Prevent editors from changing access and adding new people."
- Click Save changes.
- Click Done.
Note: If you prevent sharing of a folder, it only applies to the folder. To turn this on for the files inside, you have to change the settings for the files inside.

Give someone access to a file for a limited time
Expiration dates can’t be set for people with edit access:
- If you set an expiration for someone with edit access, they will only be able to comment on the file.
- If you change someone's access to "Can edit," the expiration date will be removed.
Set an expiration date for a file
- Click Share
or open the file and click Share.
- At the bottom right of the "Share with others" window, click Advanced.
- Under "Who has access," move your cursor over the person you want to limit and click Set expiration
.
- Next to "Access expires," click the number of days to change the expiration date. Choose a date within one year of the current date.
- Click Save changes.
