How to use the YouTube Content Verification Tool

30/11/2019
As of July 16th, 2018,  CVP has moved to an upgraded interface in our Content Management System. If you had access to CVP prior to that date, you can follow the instructions below on how to use the new interface.

If you’re experiencing any issues, please contact yt-cvp-update@google.com.

If you do not yet have a Content Verification Program (CVP) account, you will have to sign up for the tool; see here for more information.

YouTube’s Content Verification Tool is now accessed in the in-product content management system. Follow the steps below to search for content and submit copyright notifications.

1. Sign in as a content manager

  1. Sign in to your CVP YouTube account.
  2. In the top right, click the channel icon.
  3. Click on Switch account.
  4. You'll see a drop-down list of the Google accounts that you have access to. If you have access to a content management system, you'll see the content owner name with "Content Manager" below it.
  5. Select the content owner name and YouTube will switch over to the content owner account.

Click the channel icon again to switch back to other accounts.

2. Searching for videos

  1. Click on Content ID in the left-hand vertical navigation.
  2. Select the Manual Claiming tab.
  3. Enter search criteria in the search box in the upper right.
  4. You can enter keywords in the search box, which YouTube will try to match to video titles, descriptions, tags and other metadata. Entering @username or @channel ID will surface videos from a specific uploader. You can also click the down-arrow button next to the search box to apply filters based on other criteria, such as the length of the video or upload date.
    1. Videos must be manually unchecked if you choose not to request their removal. Entering new search terms will not automatically reset your selected videos.
  5. Videos related to your search terms will be displayed. Adjacent to each video is a small checkbox.
  6. Click the checkbox next to each video you wish to report.
  7. If you wish to report all of the videos on a page, you can click the checkbox at the top of the list.

3. Submitting copyright takedown requests

  1. When you are finished making selections on one page of results, click the Actions button at the top of the page and select the Takedown dropdown. A pop-up window will appear.
  2. Provide precise identification of your copyrighted work in the Work allegedly infringed free text field. Please enter only one work's title per request - this description should apply to all the videos in your takedown request. Valid descriptions include show titles, movie titles, and song titles.
  3. If applicable, please also identify any copyright owner you're acting on behalf of in the Work allegedly infringed free text field.
  4. Click the check boxes next to the statements at the bottom of the page if you agree.
  5. Type your first and last name (not a company name) in the space indicated to serve as your digital signature.
  6. Click Submit.

4. Retracting copyright claims created using the Content Verification Tool

If you wish to retract a claim of copyright infringement submitted through the CVP tool, you can retract that claim through CMS:

  1. Go to Claims in the left navigation of your Content Manager under the Content ID header.
  2. Search by video ID or otherwise locate the relevant video in the list and click the checkbox next to it.
  3. Click the Actions button at the top of the list, select Release claims, and select Apply, or
  4. Click on the claim in your claims list and click Retract in the top right corner.

What is an asset?

An asset contains information about intellectual property, such as a sound recording or a television episode, that a content owner provides YouTube for rights management on our platform.

When you submit a takedown request, you will provide an asset title to describe the copyrighted content you are seeking to protect in the Work allegedly infringed free text field. Each time you fill out this field and submit a takedown request, an asset is autogenerated. These will show up in the Assets tab in the left navigation bar under Content ID.

What is a claim?

When you submit a takedown request, a claim is created for each video that was the subject of your takedown. This will show up in the Claims tab in the left navigation bar under Content ID. This is where you can keep track of the videos you’ve requested for removal and revisit them in the event that you want to retract your claim.
