Some music or movies that you download or stream might be protected by copyright. Sites with protected content might ask to see information about your device before you see protected content.

Stop sites from playing protected content

By default, you can view protected content. For example, if you buy a movie on Google Play Movies, you can watch it in Chrome.

If you don't want to see protected content, you can block sites from playing it. When you try to play certain movies or music, you might see an error and the content won't play.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then Settings.
  3. At the bottom, click Advanced.
  4. Under "Privacy and security," click Content settings.
  5. Click Protected Content.
  6. Turn off Allow sites to play protected content.

Stop sites from seeing your device's information (Windows only)

Some sites with protected content ask to recognize your device. By default, sites are allowed to see your device's credentials.

You can block sites from recognizing your device. When you try to play certain movies or music, you might see an error and the content won't play.

  1. On your Windows computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top right, click More More and then Settings.
  3. At the bottom, click Advanced.
  4. Under "Privacy and security," click Content settings.
  5. Click Protected Content.
  6. Turn off Allow identifiers for protected content.

Chrome will play protected content by default.

If you don't want Chrome to play protected content by default, you can change your settings:

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Site settings and then Media and then Protected Content.
  4. Select Ask first.

Delete information you gave to a site

If you let a site recognize your device, you can delete the info you gave that site. Your device will create new credentials.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Chrome app Chrome.
  2. To the right of the address bar, tap More More and then Settings.
  3. Tap Site settings and then Media and then Protected Content.
  4. At the top right, tap More More and then Reset device credentials.
