Create a campaign

The features described in this article are available only to partners who use YouTube's Content ID matching system.

A campaign offers a way to promote your content from user-uploaded videos. When Content ID claims a user-uploaded video on behalf of an asset that is part of a campaign, it adds a card that directs the viewer to your content. For example, you could create a campaign that adds a link to your movie's watch page whenever Content ID claims a video that includes scenes from that movie. A card teaser appears on the user-uploaded video at the beginning of the matched portion for Content ID match claims, or at the end of the video for manual claims. A YouTube content owner can create up to 5000 campaigns.

Campaigns add cards only to user-uploaded videos that match the visual or audiovisual component of your asset's reference; audio-only matches are eligible only for music label partners. The card doesn't appear on videos with brief matches.

A campaign can apply to all of your assets or just to selected assets. The card can direct viewers to a specific video (including a transactional video) or to a channel page. You can create multiple campaigns for different collections of assets, along with a default campaign that applies for assets that aren't part of another campaign. Learn more about choosing campaign types.

Set a default campaign

  1. Go to your Campaigns page.
  2. Next to "Default campaign," click the edit icon .
  3. Choose your default:
    • Do nothing
    • Feature official videos on fan uploads. If you choose Feature official videos on fan uploads, YouTube adds a card that links to the reference for the asset making the claim.
  4. Click Save.
The card appears only for assets that have a playable reference. If the asset's reference is set to Private or isn't available as a playable YouTube video, no card appears for videos claimed with the asset.

Use the Campaign performance report

You can monitor a campaign's performance data in the weekly Campaign Performance report. Only manually-created campaigns can be seen in the Campaign Performance report. Default campaigns and automatic links to transactional content aren't included. Learn more about choosing campaign types.

This report gives you an overview of campaign details such as start and end dates and applied assets. You can use this report to track weekly traffic metrics, including UGC views and clicks on your campaign card.

Use the report to assess how different campaigns are performing over time relative to one another.
