Encoder settings for Live 360 degree videos

30/11/2019

You can stream in 360 degrees using Live Events. 360 degree videos help you provide an immersive viewing experience. Note that if you don't use 360 degree live streams, your stream needs different settings

YouTube only supports equirectangular projection for 360 videos at this time.

Set up your encoder

When you live stream 360 degree videos, you'll need to change your encoding specifications:

  1. Select Events on the YouTube live platform. Note: If you select Stream now you won't be able to stream in 360.
  2. Go to Advanced settings and check the box next to This live stream is 360°. You can also use our API if your device is integrated with YouTube Live in 360 degrees.

  3. Set up your encoder:
    1. Choose the highest supported resolution and bitrate you are able to stream at.
    2. A resolution of 2160p or 1440p is preferred for live 360.
    3. Choose 16:9 aspect ratio for the best video quality. Learn more about aspect ratios.
  4. Start streaming like you're used to with non-360 degree live streams.
If your camera offers direct integration with YouTube live, follow the directions from your camera manufacturer.

We recommend that you test your 360 degree stream before starting a public live stream so you can try different set ups. Tests should include audio and movement similar to what will be in your public live stream. During the event, monitor sound and video quality, and review error messages.

Supported platforms

YouTube supports live streaming ingestion and playback of 360 degree videos on computers in Chrome, Firefox, MS Edge, and Opera browsers. 360 degree playback is also supported in the YouTube and YouTube Gaming apps.
