Friends on YouTube

YouTube Friends are people with whom you can message videos and chat privately on the YouTube app. People only become friends after an invitation is sent by one person and accepted by the other. You can add friends to YouTube in three ways:   

  • Sharing videos via message on YouTube, in-app or on www.youtube.com
  • Inviting friends directly in-app or on www.youtube.com
  • Accepting another user’s invitation  

Add friends

  1. Click Messages  on the top right of the page.
  2. Select FRIENDS.
  3. Click Add more contacts and copy the invite link.
  4. Send the invite link to anybody you’d like via your preferred communication method.
  5. Alternatively, under “You May Know”, click the Add Friends icon  next to the name of the person you’d like to add as a friend. This will send the person a friend request on YouTube.

Note: The recipient must accept your invitation before you can message them. Invitation links expire after 72 hours.

View & manage friends list

To view or manage your YouTube friends:

  1. Click the Messages icon on the top right of the page..
  2. Select FRIENDS.
  3. Select Menu by a friend to view their channel, start a chat, remove them from your friends, or block them.

Manage suggestions for people you may know

 

Remove a person from your suggested friends list

  1. Click the Messages icon  on the top right of the page.
  2. Click FRIENDS.
  3. Scroll down to the “You May Know” section.
  4. Select Menu next to the person’s name.
  5. Click “Remove suggestion”.

View and respond to friend requests

If you have received a friend request on YouTube and would like to accept the invitation while on desktop, click on the Messages icon to view the invitation. You can:

  • Accept the request to become friends with that user on YouTube.
  • If you don't want the person to message or chat with you, you can select  to ignore the invitation.

When you open an invitation link on a computer or in a mobile browser, you’ll be able to accept the invitation.

  • Accept the invitation to become friends with that user on YouTube.

  • If you don't accept a friend request for a day or more, you'll see a reminder notification in the Inbox tab . To opt out, you can manage your YouTube notifications.

  • Inviting friends directly in-app or on www.youtube.com

Add contacts

  1. Go to the Activity tab Notifications.
  2. Tap Shared.
  3. Select View contacts.
  4. Tap Add contacts.
  5. Choose how you’d like to add contacts.

The recipient must accept your invitation before you can share videos with them. Recipients need the YouTube mobile app and a Google Account to accept your invitation. Invitation links expire after 72 hours if not accepted.

  2. Tap Shared. 
  3. Select View contacts.
  4. Tap on any contact to view their channel, remove them from your contacts, or block them.

Manage suggestions for people you may know

When you share a video, people you may know may appear as suggestions based on your usage of YouTube and other Google products. When you share a video with a contact in the "You may know" section, they will need to accept your invitation before they can view the shared video. 
Note that when you view a message, others in the chat will be able to see that you've viewed it. You'll also see when others have viewed a chat message you've sent — the note "Seen" or "Seen by " will show in the chat. 
To remove the "You may know" section from the Activity tab Notifications, tap X at the top of the section.

Receive invitations

If you are invited to connect on YouTube, you'll receive a notification that someone wants to start sharing videos with you. You can:
  • Accept the invitation to become contacts with that user on YouTube. 
  • If you don't want the person to share or chat with you, you can tap Cancel to ignore the invitation.
  • If you don't accept an invitation for a day or more, you'll see a reminder notification in the Activity tab Notifications. To opt out, you can manage your YouTube notifications.

When you open an invitation link on a computer or in a mobile browser, you'll receive a notification directing you to use the YouTube app, where contacts are supported.
