Use location extensions

30/11/2019

When you set up location extensions with your ads, you make it easier for your customers to call, visit your business or identify where your business is located.

You have the option to set your account if you'd like to track call reporting data from location extensions. This article explains how you can set up location extensions depending on your current account set-up and access. For an introduction, start with About location extensions.

Optional settings

You can remove location extensions at any time. Learn how to Remove extensions.

Before you begin

When you’ve linked a Google My Business account, your locations are eligible to show with any text ad in your account. Location extensions can also show with image and video ads. If you want to assign locations to particular campaigns or ad groups, set up filters when you create your location extensions. Keep in mind that new locations you add to Google My Business may take up to a day to link to your Google Ads account.

Instructions

The new Google Ads experience is now the exclusive way for most users to manage their accounts. If you’re still using the previous AdWords experience, choose “previous” below. Learn more

Step 1. Identify the email associated with your Google My Business account

Check whether your business is already on Google My Business (many businesses already are). Since Google My Business verification takes time, don’t set up a new Google My Business account if your business already has one.

If your business is new to Google My Business, start by creating an account. For instructions, go to Getting started with Google My Business.

Step 2. Link to GMB based on your situation

Once you’ve identified the email address of the Google My Business account you want to link to, follow these steps based on your situation.

Note that while setting up your location extensions, you can filter the addresses synced from Google My Business by business name or address label.

Situation 1: You’re not a manager of the Google My Business account so you can’t sign in to it—and you don’t need to edit GMB location information

  1. Sign in to your AdWords account.

  2. Click the Ad Extensions tab.

  3. Select View: Location extensions from the drop-down menu above the extensions table.

  4. Click + Extension. You’ll be prompted to link to your Google My Business account.

  5. Below “Request a link,” enter the email address associated with your Google My Business account, then click Request.

After you request a link, an email will be sent to the person who manages the GMB account asking them to approve your request to link it to AdWords.  (They can also approve the request directly from their GMB account.)

As a best practice, you may want to contact the GMB manager directly to let them know to check for an AdWords link request. (Sometimes email accounts used to identify Google My Business accounts aren’t checked often.)

When the Google My Business owner approves your request, locations will be linked to your AdWords account and, after about a day, any of your existing location extensions may start showing. You may also receive an email notification letting you know that the accounts are now linked.

Situation 2: You’re not a manager of the Google My Business account so you can’t sign in to it—but you need the ability to edit GMB location information

Link the accounts and edit locations in GMB

  1. Identify the person who manages Google My Business for your business, then ask that person to add your AdWords email address as an owner or manager. You may want to send them the GMB instructions: Add owners or managers.

  2. Once the GMB manager invites you to link accounts, an invitation is sent the email address associated with your AdWords account. Accept that invitation.

  3. Once you’ve accepted the invitation from the GMB account, sign in to your Google My Business account to make any edits to your addresses. For guidance, go to Edit your business listing on Google.
