"Ok Google" isn't working

If your phone or tablet isn't responding, follow these steps to try fixing the issue.

Google Assistant support: Device not responding to hotword

Step 1: See if the Google Assistant is turned on

The steps to fix "OK Google" change depending on whether the Google Assistant is turned on. Not all devices have the Google Assistant.

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.
    • If a message says "Hi, how can I help?" the Google Assistant is on. Follow the steps below for "With Google Assistant."
    • If you don’t get this message, follow the steps for "Without Google Assistant."
  2. If you’re asked to turn on the Google Assistant, tap Turn on.
    Note: If you have a Pixel phone, you won’t be able to use "OK Google" without turning on the Google Assistant. Learn more about your Google Assistant.

Step 2: Turn on "OK Google"

With Google Assistant

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. At the top right, tap Explore & Your stuff and then More More.
  3. Tap Settings and then Assistant.
  4. Under "Assistant devices," select your phone or tablet.
  5. Turn on Google Assistant.
  6. Turn on "Access with Voice Match."
    • If you see "Say "OK Google" any time," you're using an earlier version of the Google app. Follow the steps below for "Google app version 7.1 and below."
  7. If you want "OK Google" to automatically unlock your device when it hears your voice, turn on Unlock with Voice match.

Google app version 7.1 & below

  1. Follow steps 1–4 above.
  2. Turn on Say "OK Google" any time.
  3. If you want "OK Google" to automatically unlock your device when it hears your voice, turn on Trusted voice.

Without Google Assistant

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app Google app.
  2. At the top left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Voice and then Voice Match.
  3. Turn on "Access with Voice Match."
  4. If you want "OK Google" to automatically unlock your device when it hears your voice, turn on Unlock with Voice Match.

Step 3: Check for a Google app update

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, go to the Google app page.
  2. Tap Update. If you see "Installed," you already have the latest version.

Step 4: Teach Google to recognize your voice again

Devices with Google Assistant

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, touch and hold the Home button.
  2. At the top right, tap Explore & Your stuff and then More More.
  3. Tap Settings and then Assistant.
  4. Under "Assistant devices," select your phone or tablet.
  5. Turn on Google Assistant.
  6. Tap Voice model.
    • If you don’t see this option, you’re using an earlier version of the Google app. Follow the steps below for "Google app version 7.1 & below."
  7. Tap Delete voice model and then OK.
  8. Turn on Access with Voice Match.
  9. Follow the steps to record your voice.
    • Record in a quiet place
    • Speak like you would to a person
  10. If you want "OK Google" to automatically unlock your phone when it hears your voice, turn on Unlock with Voice match.

Google app version 7.1 & below

  1. Follow steps 1–3 above.
  2. Tap "OK Google" detection and then Delete voice model and then OK.
  3. Turn on Say "OK Google" any time.
  4. Follow the steps to record your voice.
    • Record in a quiet place
    • Speak like you would to a person
  5. If you want "OK Google" to automatically unlock your device when it hears your voice, turn on Trusted voice.

Devices without Google Assistant

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google app Google .
  2. At the top left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu and then Settings and then Voice and then Voice Match.
  3. To delete the voice model we currently use to recognize your voice, tap Delete voice model and then OK.
  4. Turn on Access with Voice Match.
  5. Follow these steps to record your voice:
    • Record in a quiet place
    • Speak like you would to a person
  6. If you want "OK Google" to automatically unlock your device when it hears your voice, turn on Unlock with Voice Match.

Step 5: Say "OK Google"

To see if the issue is fixed, say "OK Google."

  1. If you’re in a loud area, turn off background noise or go somewhere quieter.
  2. Say "OK Google" like you would to a person.

If "OK Google" still isn’t working, you can try to teach Google to recognize your voice again.

Other Android devices

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open your Google app Google app.
  2. At the top left of the Home screen, tap Menu Menu and then Send feedback.
  3. Tell us about the issue, and then tap Send Send.

  3. Turn on "Ok Google" hotword.
