Choose the videos you want to monetize

You can turn ads on for individual videos either when you upload them or after you've uploaded them. You can also turn ads on for multiple videos at once.

Before you start: Make sure you've completed all the steps to turn on monetization for your channel and set up an AdSense account for payments.

Creator Studio Classic

Turn on ads when you upload a video

  1. Follow the steps to upload a video. When your video is uploading, click the Monetization tab on the upload page.
  2. Select Monetize my video.
  3. Select what ad formats you want to turn on for the video. Each type of ad format notes what devices it will appear on and includes an illustration of the ad placement.
Click Save changes.

Turn on ads for videos you've already uploaded

  1. Go to your Video Manager.
  2. Next to the video you want to enable ads for, click Edit or the monetization icon .
  3. Select the Monetization tab.
  4. Select Monetize my video.
  5. Select what ad formats you want to turn on for the video. Each type of ad format notes what devices it will appear on, and includes an illustration of the ad placement.
  6. Click Save changes.

Turn ads on for multiple videos

  1. Go to Video Manager and select the videos you want to monetize.

  2. At the top of the page, click the Actions drop-down menu.

  3. Select Monetize.

  4. Use the checkboxes to confirm or change the ad formats you want to enable for these videos, and specify if your videos contain paid product placement.

  5. Click Monetize.

YouTube Studio beta

Follow these instructions to turn on ads for videos you’ve already uploaded:

  1. Sign in to YouTube.
  2. Go to studio.youtube.com
  3. In the left menu, select Videos.
  4. Select a video.
  5. In the left menu, select Monetization.
  6. Choose the type of ads that you want to run.
  7. Click Save.

Before any ads appear, the video will go through a standard review process.

By turning on ads for videos on YouTube, you confirm that you have all the necessary rights to the visual and audio elements of those videos.

Troubleshoot monetization issues

If you're having issues submitting videos for monetization, it may be because some of the videos are age-restricted or claimed by a third party. You can't monetize these types of videos.
