About Custom Audiences from Page engagement

30/11/2019

This article contains instructions on how to set up an engagement Custom Audience from Page engagement and explanations of the rule sections available for them.

Create a Page engagement Custom Audience

To create an Page engagement Custom Audience:

  1. Go to your Audiences.
  2. Click the Create Audience drop-down and choose Custom Audience.

Note: If you've never created an audience of any kind before, you'll see a Create a Custom Audiences button, not a drop-down. Everything else will be the same.

  3. Click Engagement.
  4. Click Facebook Page.
  5. Set a rule section (more information in the next section). You have to start with an inclusive one.
  6. Add more inclusive or exclusive rule sections as desired. You can have up to five total rule sections per audience.
  7. Give your audience a name (and description, if desired).
  8. Click Create Audience.
  9. When we've finished creating your audience, select it during ad set creation to reach the people in it with ads. Learn how.

Rule sections

Rule sections contain the rules that define your audience. Each rule section requires a Page, an engagement type and a "look-back window" (the number of days you want us to look back to find people who engaged in the way and on the Page you selected).

Pages

You can use any Page that you have advertiser permissions on. You can also use different Pages in different rule sections within a single audience.

Engagement types

These are the types of engagement that you can add to a rules section:

  • Anyone who visited your Page
  • People who engaged with any post or ad
  • People who clicked with any call-to-action button
  • People who sent a message to your Page
  • People who saved your Page or any post

Look-back windows

You can tell us to go back up to 365 days to find people who've engaged with your chosen Page in your chosen way in each rules section. Here's an example of how this type of rule works. It uses People who sent a message to your Page as its engagement type, but the principles can apply to the specifics of any rules section:

If you tell us to look back 30 days and a person messaged your Page 29 days ago, they'll be a part of that rule (whether that means they're included or excluded from the final audience). However, if they fail to send a message the next day, they'll then be removed from it. Anyone new who sends a message within the time period you choose will be added to the rule (and included in or excluded from the audience as appropriate). This means that the audience is constantly being refreshed, so you don't need to edit or create a new audience of this type unless you want to change the rules sections.
