About billing thresholds
A billing threshold is an amount that determines when you'll be charged for your ads based on how much you spend. This article covers:
Before you begin

- Are you trying to add a payment method to your ad account? Take these steps.

- If you pay for Facebook ads using your bank account (direct debit) or a manual payment method, you don't have a billing threshold. Learn more about how you'll be charged for ads if you don't have a billing threshold.
What a billing threshold is and how it works
You can think of your billing threshold as a way to build up a good payment history with Facebook: It's an amount that you can spend on ads before we charge you for them. As you run ads on Facebook, you'll accrue ad costs. Whenever your ad costs reach your billing threshold amount, we'll charge you for that amount.
When you first start advertising on Facebook, your billing threshold will be automatically set to a small amount. But as you make successful billing threshold payments, it may be raised until your account reaches a final threshold amount.
As an example, let's say that you just created your first ad, and your ad account has a billing threshold of GBP 25. As your ad runs, it'll accrue costs. If your outstanding ad costs reach GBP 25, we'll charge you GBP 25.
Once your payment goes through, your balance will be cleared, your billing threshold may be raised to a new, higher amount and you'll start accruing costs again as your ad continues to run. So in a given month, you could reach your billing threshold once, multiple times or not at all, depending on what your billing threshold is and how much money you're spending on ads. This is also why you may be charged multiple times even if you're running just one ad.
How to check and change your billing threshold
Your payment settings is where you can check and change what amount your billing threshold is set to.
Bear in mind that by changing your billing threshold, you're changing how frequently you're charged for ads. If you want to be billed more frequently, you can lower your threshold. If you want to receive fewer bills, you can raise your threshold. Just note that if you decide to raise your threshold, your changes may not take effect immediately. You may need to reach your initial threshold and make successful payments before your threshold is raised to the new amount that you set.
Steps to check your billing threshold
- Go to your payment settings.
- In the Next bill section, review the amount next to "You'll also get a bill when you spend".
This is your billing threshold. We'll charge you for this amount whenever you spend it while you run ads. If you keep advertising after you've reached your billing threshold, you'll get another bill on your monthly bill date for any remaining ad costs.
Since it's possible to reach your billing threshold multiple times and get charged on your bill date, you may receive multiple charges in a given month. This is also why you may be charged after you purchase ads or even after you've stopped running them.
If you'd like to make payments before you reach your billing threshold or before your bill date, you can pay for your ads before your bill is due.
Steps to change your billing threshold
- Go to your payment settings.
- In the Next bill section, click Manage:
- Click Update billing threshold, or if you don't see this button, move on to the next step.
- Enter the threshold amount you want to use and then click Change threshold.
Note: If you don't see Manage, it may be because you aren't an admin of the ad account that you're working on. You have to be one to manage an ad account's billing threshold. Learn more about ad accounts and permissions.
Your billing threshold will be updated.
