Will I be charged tax on my purchases of Facebook ads?

30/11/2019

Whether you're charged value added tax (VAT) or goods and service tax (GST) on your Facebook ad purchases depends on whether you're purchasing ads for business purposes and on the country of your residence. The most common scenarios are described below:

  1. You live in Ireland:

Your purchase of Facebook ads is made through our European Headquarters in Dublin, so if your business's address is in Ireland, we add VAT at the applicable Irish rate. You're charged VAT regardless of whether you're purchasing Facebook ads for business or personal purposes. Learn how to find VAT charges on your billing reports.

  2. Your business's address is in the EU where a local selling structure applies and you're purchasing Facebook ads for business purposes:
This information applies to advertisers with a business address in Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

If your business's address is in the EU, but outside of Ireland, and you purchase Facebook ads for a business purpose, we add VAT to the cost of your Facebook ad purchase. However, if you're registered for VAT, you'll probably be able to recover it from the tax authorities. 3. Your business's address is in the EU where a local selling structure doesn't apply and you're purchasing Facebook ads for business purposes:
  4. If your business's address is in the EU, but outside of Ireland, and you purchase Facebook ads for a business purpose, we don't add VAT to the costs of your purchases of Facebook ads. However, you're required to self-assess your VAT charges at the applicable rates of the country that you're doing business in. Facebook isn't able to provide tax advice, so please contact your country's tax authority for additional information about the self-assessment process.

  5. Your address is in the EU and you aren't purchasing Facebook ads for a business purpose, but rather a private non-business purpose:

If you're not purchasing Facebook ads for a business purpose, we add VAT to the costs of your Facebook ads purchases at the applicable rate of the country you're in. Learn how to find VAT charges on your billing reports.

  6. Your business's address is in India:

Your purchase of Facebook ads is made through our office in India, so if your business's address is in India, we add GST at the applicable Indian rate. You are charged GST regardless of whether you're purchasing Facebook ads for business or personal purposes.

  7. Your business's address is in Australia where a local selling structure applies:

Your purchase of Facebook ads is made through our office in Australia, so if your business's address is in Australia, we add GST at the applicable Australian rate. You are charged GST regardless of whether you're purchasing Facebook ads for business or personal purposes.

  8. Your business's address is in Australia where a local selling structure doesn't apply:

If the bill-by address on the receipt of the Facebook ad purchase is outside of Australia, but your business's address is in Australia and you're not purchasing Facebook ads for a business purpose or your business isn't GST registered, we add GST at the applicable Australian rate. If you're GST registered and purchasing ads for a business purpose, please provide us with your ABN to ensure that GST isn't charged. Learn how to add your ABN to your ad account.

  9. Your business's address is in Russia:

If your business's address is in Russia, we add VAT at the applicable Russian rate. You're charged VAT regardless of whether you're purchasing Facebook ads for business or personal purposes.

  10. If your business's billing address is outside of the EU, India or Australia:

You won't be charged VAT or GST.
