About location targeting

30/11/2019

Location targeting allows you to advertise to people based on their location, which can be a country, a region or a city.

You can use this tool with most advertising objectives. If you choose the Store Visits objective, you can use business locations targeting to reach people in a radius around your restaurants, shops or dealerships.

Refining your audience

Start by refining your audience based on which people would be most interested in your business. The choices for audiences within a location are:

Everyone in this location (default): This option allows you to reach people whose home or most recent location is within the selected area. You might want to advertise large fairs or high-profile sport events, for example, to everyone in a location.

People who live in this location: This includes people whose home is within the selected area. You might want to advertise a local retail shop, for example, to people who live in a location.

People recently in this location: With this option, you are reaching people whose most recent location is within the selected area. You might want to advertise time sensitive sales, for example, to people recently in the location you choose.

People travelling in this location: This includes people travelling in the selected area as determined by the device and connection information that we may collect who are more than 125 miles from their home location. You might want to advertise rental cars, for example, to people travelling in a location.

Choosing locations

Next, you can type locations into the Type to add more locations field. You can enter locations such as:

  • Countries (up to 25)
  • States
  • Provinces
  • Cities (up to 250)
  • Congressional districts
  • ZIP or postcodes (up to 2,500)

You don't even need to know the names of the cities you're targeting. Our system can find high-population areas for you. Learn more

Most objectives will let you target:

  • Worldwide (type in 'Worldwide')
  • Free trade areas (e.g. 'EEA' for the European Economic Area)
  • Regions (e.g. 'Asia')
  • Other areas (e.g. 'iTunes app store countries', 'Emerging markets', 'Euro area')

You can also drop a pin on a map and target ads to people within a certain radius of the pin (see below for more information).

If you need to target many locations, learn how to bulk upload them.

Radius targeting

When targeting an address, city/town or "pin drop", a targeting radius is involved. It indicates how far outside that location we'll look for people to show your ad to.

The radius itself appears on the targeting map. It can be adjusted by clicking the button next to each location and using the slider and field that appear.

Notes:

  • The minimum and maximum radius varies by location type.
  • We'll target all other locations of the type that you selected that fall within the radius. For cities, this means that if the city centre falls within the radius, we'll target that city. If it doesn't, we won't.
  • If you target a location near the border of a country, the radius will not extend into the other country. You'll have to target the other country separately. This applies even though our visualised radius may extend beyond the border.
  • You can't use radius targeting for ZIP codes or postcodes, states, regions or countries.
  • When you target specific countries, counties/regions, ZIP codes or postcodes, you'll see a polygon shape around the area. We won't show the polygon shape for a city when the entire city is selected, but in this instance, the entire city will be targeted.

If you need to target several locations at once, try bulk uploading them.

Business locations targeting

Business locations targeting allows you to reach people near your business's physical locations.

This type of targeting is only available for the Store Visits objective.

To reach people around your business:

  1. First, you will need to upload your business locations. Learn how you can add your business locations.
  2. After you've successfully added your business locations, go to Ads Manager andchoose the Store Visits objective.
  3. Under the Business locations section, choose Create a location set. A location set is a collection of shops that you've chosen to target as a group.
  4. Select the country of your business location and then add specific shop locations within the country you've selected.
  5. Choose the radius around each of your business locations that you want to reach people in. You can either select Automatic radius to allow us to automatically set a radius around your shop locations, or choose Fixed radius to reach people within a fixed distance to one of your locations.
  6. Give your location set a unique name.
  7. Once you've finished, click Save.
Note: After you've created and saved a location set, you will be able to reuse it in future campaigns.
