What you learned: Add movie poster style effects to text

Create the movie title

1. Select the Horizontal Type tool in the Toolbar.
2. In the Options bar, choose a bold condensed font, like DIN Condensed, make sure font style is set to Bold, set font size to about 100 points, and set font color to white.
3. Type the movie title in all caps.
4. Move the cursor away from the movie title until the cursor changes to a Move tool icon. Then drag the movie title to the bottom of the poster.
5. Select the Move tool, which commits the text. Drag the movie title to center it horizontally, using the pink Smart Guides that appear as you drag.

Add layer styles to the movie title

1. In the Layers panel, double-click the movie title layer to open the Layer Styles dialog box.
2. In the Layer Styles dialog box, select the Gradient Overlay effect. Then click the Gradient option to open the Gradient editor.
3. In the Gradient Editor, select the Orange, Yellow, Orange gradient preset. Then edit the gradient by deleting the orange color stop on the right, dragging the yellow color stop to the right to 100%, and dragging the middle stop to the right to about 60%.
4. Click OK to close the Gradient Editor. Click OK again to close the Layer Styles dialog box.

Tip: If you want to reopen the Layer Styles dialog box so you can edit the Gradient Overlay effect or add more effects to the same layer, double-click the Gradient Overlay effect on the movie title layer in the Layers panel.

Create additional type layers

1. Select the Horizontal Type tool. In the image, move away from the movie title text until a dotted square border appears around the I-beam cursor; then click. This creates a separate Type layer, rather than adding to the movie title layer.
2. In the Options bar, choose a thin condensed font, like Avenir Next Condensed, set font style to Regular, and set font size to about 44 points.
3. Type the movie producer’s name in all caps. Select the Move tool and drag this line of text into place above the movie title.
4. With the Move tool, Option-drag (MacOS) or Alt-drag (Windows) the producer’s name to make a copy of that line of text. Position the copy below the movie title.
5. Drag across the copy to select all its text. In the Options bar, set font size to about 55 points and change font color to orange-red. Type “IN PANOVISION” in all caps.
6. Use the Move tool and pink Smart Guides to center the IN PANOVISION line of text horizontally.

Save your work

• Choose File > Save as to save the photo in PSD format with the Type layers and effects intact, so you can edit them in the future.
