Choose the best format for your ads on Instagram

In this article:

Your Instagram ad will appear in people's Instagram feeds along with images and videos shared by their friends, family and other Instagram accounts that they follow.

All Instagram ads will have a Sponsored icon in the top-right and may contain a call-to-action button below the image. Your ad's caption will also appear below the image.

Using single images in your Instagram ads

If you use a single image in your Instagram ad, your image may appear in the square or landscape format depending on which format you chose when creating your ad.

If you use video creative in your Instagram ad, your video may appear in the square or landscape format depending on which format you chose when creating your ad.

Using the Carousel format in your Instagram ads

If you use the carousel format as the creative for your Instagram ad, your Instagram ad will appear in the square format. People may click the arrows located on the left and right of the image to see additional images within the carousel format ad.

Ads in Instagram Stories

Stories ads provide a full-screen and immersive experience that enables you to tell your business' story on Instagram. Ads in Instagram Stories now support all feed photo and video dimensions (from 1.91:1 to 4:5), meaning you can upload a single photo or up to a 60-second video in any dimension that will appear in between people's stories. For videos that are longer than 15 seconds, your ad will show the first three seconds of the video and include a call-to-action button to continue watching. Stories ads can be created using Ads Manager, the API or Creative Hub.

When you create an ad for Instagram Stories, Facebook will automatically provide full-screen support for your ad.

  • You'll be able select a background gradient so that the ad displays in full-screen format.
  • If your ad is square or landscape, the text from the Instagram feed or Facebook feed ads will be included in Stories as text at the bottom of your ad.
  • Only text with less than 190 characters in total will be shown at this time.

The following objectives and buying types are available for Stories ads:

  • Objectives: Video Views, Reach, Brand Awareness, Traffic, Conversions, App Installs, Lead Generation
  • Buying type: Auction, reach and frequency

Carousel ads for Instagram Stories

Instagram Stories ads now support up to three cards or pieces of media (photo or video). By default, a photo will display for 5 seconds and a video for up to 15 seconds. Carousel ads for stories requires 9:16 creative and must be run in a standalone campaign. Learn more about carousel ads in Instagram Stories.

Instagram ads have a Sponsored label that appears under the profile name and a menu icon on the right-hand side of the header. When you click the menu icon, you'll reveal options to hide the ad or learn more about advertising on Instagram. Ads may also contain a call-to-action button across the bottom that will be highlighted after a person hovers over an ad for three seconds. Call-to-action buttons will vary based on business objectives. Your ad's caption will appear below the image, video or Carousel format.
