Editing Facebook photo

What you'll learn

How to add a photo to the pre-made template, and save out a new ready-to-upload profile picture and cover photo.

In this tutorial, you'll use a pre-made Photoshop template to create a custom Facebook cover photo and profile picture that interact seamlessly with each other. Your cover photo and profile picture will look like one continuous graphic, instead of two separate photos.

Download the template above to help you create this effect.

Open a photo

Open Photoshop and go to File > Open. Select a photo that you want to use as your profile picture and cover photo. If you're following along with the sample photo, select "polaroid-collage.jpg". Click Open.

Try to use a photo that is at least 2000 pixels wide so that you can easily place it into the template.

Remember that your profile picture will be at the bottom left corner of the photo. In the sample photo, the subject's face is at the bottom left corner of the composition so that it's easier to reposition. Try finding a photo where your subject is small or in the distance: a group of people, a photo with a landmark or landscape behind your subject, or a still life like the sample photo.

Select the photo you want to use

Open the pre-made template

Go to File > Open and locate the "facebook-template.psd" file. Click Open.

Locate the Layers panel on the right side of your workspace. If you can't see the panel, go to Window > Layers. Notice that there are four layers:

  1. "Facebook frame" - This layer will help you preview how your cover photo and profile picture will look once uploaded to Facebook.
  2. "Artwork" - This layer will contain the photo or design you're using.
  3. "Profile picture" - This layer will be used to crop and export your profile picture.
  4. "Cover photo" - This layer will be used to crop and export your cover photo.

Open the pre-made template

Add your photo to the template

Locate the file tabs at the top of the workspace and click on the photo file. Go to Select > All. Press command "C" (Mac) or control "C" (Windows) on your keyboard to copy the photo.

Go back to the template by clicking on "facebook-template.psd" from the file tabs at the top of the workspace. Click the "Artwork" layer from the Layers panel to make it active, and press command "V" (Mac) or control "V" (Windows) on your keyboard. This will paste the photo into the "Artwork" layer below the Facebook frame.

Add your photo to the template

Adjust your photo

Click on the "Artwork" layer in the Layers panel to make it active.

Go to Edit > Free Transform, or press command/control "T" on your keyboard. A bounding box will appear around the edges of the photo. If you can't see the edges, zoom out by pressing command/control "-" on your keyboard.

  • Scale the photo by clicking and dragging on one of the four corner handles of the bounding box. Hold down Shift on your keyboard as you drag to constrain the original proportions.
  • Reposition the photo by clicking and dragging anywhere within the bounding box.
  • Rotate the photo by positioning your mouse outside any of the handles on the bounding box. Click and drag to rotate.

Make sure to position the photo so that it fills both the cover photo and profile picture areas. When you're done, press Enter on your keyboard.

Adjust your photo

Hide the Facebook frame

Once you've positioned the photo, click on the small eye icon to the left of the "Facebook frame" layer in the Layers panel to hide the layer.

Hide the Facebook frame

Crop the profile picture

In the Layers panel locate the "Profile picture" layer thumbnail. Hold down Command (Mac) or Control (Windows) on your keyboard and click on the layer thumbnail. This will select an area that fits the height and width requirements of profile pictures on Facebook.

Go to Image > Crop to crop the image to the profile picture area.

Select the Profile picture layer

Crop the photo

Save the profile picture

Go to File > Save As...

Choose a file name and destination for your profile picture using the Save As dialog window. From the Format dropdown, choose JPEG.

When you're done, click Save. Review the options on the next dialog window and click Okay.

Save As

Undo using the History panel

Click on the History panel from the right side of your workspace. If you can't see it, go to Window > History.

Click on the "Load Selection" step in the History panel. This will undo the previous two steps and reload the uncropped image.

Undo to reload the uncropped photo

Crop and save the cover photo

Repeat steps 6 and 7 to crop and save your cover photo:

1. In the Layers panel, command-click (Mac) or control-click (Windows) the "Cover photo" layer thumbnail. Go to Image > Crop to crop the image to the cover photo area.

2. After cropping, go to File > Save As... and save your cover photo as a JPG.

Crop and save your photo

Done!

Upload your profile picture and cover photo to Facebook. Because both are sized in proportion to the display dimensions on Facebook, you don't need to reposition or crop the images when uploading them.

Keep this template handy to help compose creative profile pictures and cover photos. You can create more complex images by combining multiple photos into composites or collages. Try photographing yourself in different positions and combining them into a single composition, or place yourself in a different background.
