Best practices guide for Ads Manager
This guide will familiarise you with the available tools and best practices for using Ads Manager.

Welcome to Ads Manager!
Ads Manager is where you can view, make changes to and see results for all of your Facebook campaigns, ad sets and ads. With Ads Manager you can:
- Create ads: Design ads that appear on the Facebook family of apps and services (including Instagram and Audience Network).
- Manage ads: Edit your ads and update your images, audience, budget or schedule.
- Measure results: View up-to-date data on the performance of your ads and schedule reports.
Note: Ads Manager supports multiple ad accounts. If you can't find a campaign, ad set or ad, make sure you switch to the correct ad account before you create or manage your ads.
When you visit Ads Manager, your ad account is grouped in four main tabs that follow the structure of Facebook ads:
Account overview
Your account overview contains a summary of activity for your ad account, such as the reach or amount spent for all ads you've created. Your account overview also includes a detailed breakdown of the amount you've spent on your ads over the past seven days and any spending limits you've set on the account.
Campaigns
In this tab, you can view and manage your campaigns. From here, you can:
- Create a new campaign
- Duplicate existing campaigns
- Edit your campaign and update the name or add a spending limit
- View insights to see how well your campaign is performing
- Export or share your campaign results to Excel
- Customise the columns and break down your results
Ad sets
In this tab, you can view and manage your ad sets for your campaigns. From here, you can:
- Create a new ad set as part of an existing campaign
- Duplicate ad sets
- Edit your ad set and update the name, placement, budget, schedule and targeting
- View insights to see how well your ad set is performing
- Export or share your ad set results to Excel
- Customise the columns and break down your results
Ads
In this tab, you can view and manage your ads for your ad sets. From here, you can:
- Create a new ad as part of an existing ad set
- Duplicate ads
- Edit your ad and update the creative
- View insights to see how well your ad is performing
- Export or share your ad results to Excel
- Preview your ad to see how it looks across eligible Facebook apps and services
- Customise the columns and break down your results
When you select your campaigns, ad sets or ads, these tabs show the number you've selected and automatically filter your selections. For example, when you select a campaign, you can see the number of ad sets and ads in that campaign.

In this chapter, you'll learn about the ad management options available to you in Ads Manager.
Organise your campaigns, ad sets and ads
As you create more ads in Ads Manager, you can easily search and filter your ads to retrieve information about a specific ad. (For example, you want to share the results of a past campaign with an agency you're working with.) In Ads Manager, you can search for your ads individually, apply filters to ads or view your ads on the dates when they run.
- Search: Click Search to find your ads based on specific conditions, such as delivery, impressions or reach. You can also click the next to Search to find ads based on their specific name or their specific ad ID.
- Filters: Click Filters to find ads based on specific results. You can choose from preset filters, such as filters for placement, objective or optimisation goals, or create a custom filter. When you create a custom filter, you can save it for later use in Ads Manager. Learn more about using filters in Ads Manager.
- Date range: You can adjust the date range in Ads Manager to only show ads within a specific time frame. By default, this option is set to Lifetime, but you can click it to choose a preset date range or create your own custom date range. You can also compare ad performance across two different date ranges.
Take action on your ads
In the Campaigns, Ad sets and Ads tabs, you'll find different options for creating and managing your ads.
- Create Campaign / create ad set / create ad: Click this button to create a new campaign, ad set or ads. If you create a new ad set or ads, you'll need to attach it to a new or existing campaign or ad set respectively. Learn more about creating campaigns, ad sets or ads in Ads Manager.
- Edit: If you want to update your ads after you've published them, you can edit them. When you edit your ads, you can update details such as your targeting, placements or creative. Learn more about editing your campaigns, ad sets and ads in Ads Manager.
- Duplicate campaign/ad set/ad: If you want to reuse your campaigns, ad sets or ads, you can duplicate them. When you duplicate your ads, you can decide to publish them as they are, or edit their details before you publish. Learn more about duplicating your campaigns, ad sets or ads.
- Create Rule: You can create automated rules that automatically update or notify you of changes to your campaigns, ad sets or ads. Rather than checking the performance of your campaigns, ad sets or ads daily, automated rules can run these checks for you and perform the actions that you'd normally do manually. - Preview (ads tab only): If you want to see what your ad looks like across different placements (for example, News Feed), you can preview the ad. You can also share your preview or see how the ad looks with comments and reactions. Learn more about previewing your ads.
- More: If you want to turn your ads on or off, or delete your ads, click More. Learn more about turning your ads on and off or deleting them.
Locate the results you care about
You can view specific data and learn if your campaigns, ad sets and ads are helping you meet your business goals by customising the columns in the Ads Manager table. You can choose from different reporting templates (such as Delivery or Engagement) or customise the columns of the table with different metrics.
- Columns: Choose from preset columns that target specific metrics, or customise your columns to create your own selections. Learn more about customising your columns.
- Breakdown: Choose how your performance data looks by using breakdowns such as Age, Gender or Placement. Learn more about using breakdowns for your performance data.
- Export: Export your performance data as an Excel or CSV file. You can also click the and choose Share to send a link to the data with people on your ad account. Learn more about exporting or sharing your performance data in Ads Manager.
Update your ads and see how well your ads are performing
On the right-hand side of Ads Manager, you can open the side pane to edit your ads, view the results of your ads in rich, visual charts and see a timeline of all updates made to your ads. When you want to edit your ad or view your overall advertising performance or history, click to tick the box next to the ad, then click .
Here's what you can do:
View your charts: For every ad that you run on Facebook, you can view the charts for your data to see how well your ad is performing. This can include how many people see your ad, how many people engage with your ad and how much your ad costs. You can also view breakdowns by age, gender and placement in the charts. - Performance: The Performance chart shows the number of people who click on your ad, the number of people you reach and the overall cost of your ad. If you scroll over the line chart, you'll see individual results for that day reflected in the chart. If you want to change the results you see in the charts, click Custom and choose the metrics you want to view.
- Demographics: The Demographics chart shows how your ad performs across different ages and genders. You can scroll over each section of the chart to see individual results for each age group.
- Placement: The Placement chart shows your ad's performance across different placements, such as Facebook or Instagram. Depending on where your ad is eligible to appear, you'll see where your ad is receiving the most delivery. You can also click the drop-down menu to see where your ad appears on mobile and desktop devices.
Edit your ads: When you edit your ads in Ads Manager, you can change details such as your audience, placements or budget. If you edit multiple ads at the same time, bear in mind that some editing options may not be available if they have different objectives, ad formats or budgets. Review recent activity on your ads: You can view a history of the changes on your ad account in Ads Manager. You can see who made changes to your ad account, what changes were made to your ads and when those changes were made. You can see the changes made to most of your ad accounts as far back as January 2014. Learn more about your activity history in Ads Manager.

In this chapter, you'll learn how to create an ad in Ads Manager.
To create a new ad, click Create ad in Ads Manager. When you create an ad, you'll walk through each section of the campaign structure to finalise your ad.
Note: Each section in this guide shows a general walk-through of the ad creation process on Facebook. Depending on which objective you choose, you may see additional things when you create your ad.
Campaign
Choose your objective.
The first step in creating an ad is choosing an objective. Your ad objective is what you want people to do when they see your ads. When you create an ad, you first choose your objective. The objective you choose aligns with your overall business goals:- Awareness: Objectives that generate interest in your product or service.
- Consideration: Objectives that get people to start thinking about your business and look for more information about it.
- Conversions: Objectives that encourage people interested in your business to purchase or use your product or service.
Name your campaign
Next to Campaign name, add a name for your campaign or use the default name that appears.Ad set

In the Audience section, fill in the details of your audience. You can choose audience characteristics such as age, gender, interests and more. Learn about the targeting options available.Select your ad placements.
In the Placements section, you can opt to allow your ads to automatically be shown in places where they're likely to perform best, or manually choose where your ads appear on Facebook, Instagram or Audience Network. Learn more about selecting ad placements.Set your budget, bid and schedule

Ad
Select an ad format
Your ad format is what your ad will look like on eligible placements. Depending on your objective, you can choose from the following:- Carousel: An ad with two or more scrollable images or videos.
- Single image: An ad with one image. You can create up to six ads with one image each.
- Single video: An ad with one video.
- Slideshow: A looping video ad with up to ten images.
- Canvas: An immersive story format that combines images and videos.
Choose your images and/or videos

Connect your Page and add more details to your ad
Connect your ad to Page for your business and then add additional details to the ad (such as a website URL or a call-to-action button). As you add details to your ad, you'll see a preview of what your ad will look like across all eligible placements.All ads are now required to have an associated Page; you cannot create an ad without a Facebook Page.
Place your order
When you're ready, click Place Order at the bottom of ad creation to order your Facebook ads. The first time you place an order, you'll be asked to enter your payment information. Learn more about payment options for advertising.Now that you've learned about Ads Manager, it's time to create an ad!
